New over-the-counter allergy treatment
You can now buy cetirizine(Zyrtec) over the counter for temporary relief of hay-fever symptoms in adults and children age 2 and older. It's less sedating than some older nonprescription allergy drugs, such as chlorpheniramine(Chlor-Trimeton and generic) and diphenhydramine(BenadrylAllergy and generic). But you should probably start with the OTC version of the related drug loratadine(Claritin and generic). It's as safe and effective as cetirizine and costs less, since it is sold as a generic.
